The Donald has taken off the gloves.
Days after polls showed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump falling behind rival Ben Carson in the early voting state of Iowa, Trump said Carson was the exact opposite of what America needs.
“Ben Carson is super low energy,” Trump said Friday. “We need tremendous energy.”
In an interview with CNN that took place Friday and will air Sunday, Trump launched his broadest attack to date on Carson.
“I like Ben, but he cannot do with trade like I do,” Trump told CNN’s Jake Tapper. Carson is “just not going to be able to do deals with China, to be able to do deals with Japan.”
Trump sad the candidates differ on immigration.
“He’s very, very weak on immigration and I’m very strong on immigration,” Trump said. “Ben Carson is very, very weak on immigration. He believes in amnesty strongly. He believes in citizenship. He’s going to give citizenship to people who are here illegally — you can’t do that.”
Carson’s plan gives undocumented immigrants guest worker status if they report their presence. Carson has not called that an amnesty.
Trump also mocked Carson during an appearance in Miami Friday night. He mimicked a gleeful TV report announcing “breaking” news about Trump’s popularity dip in Iowa.
“They informed Ben — but he was asleep,” Trump told the cheering crowd.
Rival Jeb Bush, Trump told the crowd, is “low energy.”
“But Ben Carson is super low energy, right?” Trump added.
“The hundreds of fervent fans standing in, yes, the Donald J. Trump Grand Ballroom, shrieked with approval,” The Miami Herald reported.
