Several dozen known Pakistani and Afghan men who have illegally crossed the U.S. border near San Diego and at least two have been confirmed to possess ties to terrorism, according to the San Diego Reader.
In a letter written by U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., to the Department of Homeland Security, one man is described as having, “associations with a known or suspected terrorist.” The other man is, “a positive match for derogatory information in an alternative database.”
Muhammed Azeem and Muktar Ahmad are both in their 20s and were detained carrying U.S. cash. Even more concerning are reports from the Border Patrol that it has apprehended dozens more fighting age Pakistani and Afghani men since September.
Traditionally, illegal Pakistani and Afghan border crossings on the San Diego border sector have been rather unusual. From October 2014 to September 2015, the Border Patrol detained 19 in total. From September to November of 2015, however, agents detained 24, surpassing the total of the previous year in a little over a month.
Border Patrol officials have also expressed concerns that there may be far more entering the country than they are able to detain. Until November, Pakistanis would surrender to U.S. agents, be given a date to appear in immigration court, then be released on their own recognizance.
That method seems to be changing, however, as federal agents believe the illegals are making greater efforts to avoid detection. In addition, the men who are arrested are being capture alone, rather than in groups, and have been farther north of the border, suggesting more successful infiltration.
National Border Patrol Council President Terence Shigg told the Reader, “It’s very concerning. We have no idea what their actual intentions are because we have no effective way of backtracking. Just the males are coming and there’s no way for us to know for certain who they are and why” they are coming.
Shigg also noted that federal officials should be discussing these issues more openly and committing more resources to apprehension and detainment.
“These are credible threats,” he said.
