A city councilman from a small Texas town was pulled over by Border Patrol agents last weekend, but soon after being confronted by the agents, the official hit the gas and tried to flee. After he was apprehended, it quickly became clear why he ran.
According to KENS in San Antonio, Crystal City Councilman Marco Rodriguez was arrested Saturday and charged with trying to smuggle three illegal aliens across the Mexico-Texas border.
Border Patrol agents say they initially pulled over the 36-year-old Rodriguez in the town of Big Wells and began quizzing him about his passengers. Rodriguez tried to escape, but the chase didn’t last long before the agents captured Rodriguez along with the three illegals in his truck.
Rodriguez told federal officials that he was paid $1,900 to drive the illegals to San Antonio.
The councilman took the unpaid office in 2014, according to state records. His term is up in May, 2016.
The councilman’s Facebook page notes that before he became a politician he served in the U.S. Army.
Rodriguez was remanded to a federal detention center and is now facing human smuggling charges. He is due in federal court Thursday.
According to KNES, Rodriguez is the second Crystal City official who has ended up in trouble in the past few weeks. At the end of December, City Manager James Jonas was arrested for assaulting a woman as she entered a City Council meeting.
