Usually when a person decides to run for president of the United States, they do so out of a desire to serve their country and its people.
In the case of Bernie Sanders, this may not be the only reason.
In a tweet published Friday by Sanders, he proudly declared, “I am running for president because 11 million undocumented people cannot continue living in the shadows.”
I am running for president because 11 million undocumented people cannot continue living in the shadows.

The tweet was met with mixed reactions, with some expressing support for Sanders’ statement, while others expressed outrage.
One twitter user sarcastically agreed with Sanders, but advocated deportation instead of legalization.
@BernieSanders Exactly, they should be deported

Another user asked how Sanders planned to implement legalization, let alone offset the costs of it.
@BernieSanders Are you gone give them free citizenship too without a plan or a way to pay for it?

Some even took it as a slap in the face that Sanders would seek the presidency to help those here illegally, rather than those who are U.S. citizens.
@BernieSanders What about the American taxpayers who are footing the bill for all these "shadow-dwellers"??

And some expressed shock that Sanders desires to help those who have violated our laws and abused our system.
@BernieSanders ur running for president to help illegal aliens who broke our laws and raped our system for free benefits? That's scary.

With over 94 million Americans out of the workforce — the most since 1977 — many Americans believe the first goal of our next president should be improving the lives of those here naturally and legally.
It also seems as though many Americans do not share Sanders sympathy for the plight of the illegal immigrant, considering most of those within the U.S. illegally came here of their own volition.
While Sanders has certainly tapped into one segment of the population with his leftist policies, he also seems to be alienating many Americans who view his platform as contrary to the best interests of the country.
