At a time when America faces darkness and is in need of strength, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has unleashed his first TV ad, which places Trump’s candidacy as the solution to the stark reality of the nation’s challenges.
“The politicians can pretend it’s something else, but Donald Trump calls it radical Islamic terrorism,” the ad’s narrator says as images are shown of President Obama and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. There is a swift cut to an image of cruise missiles being launched from a U.S. ship, then images of the San Bernardino, California, shooters, figures racing across the screen surreptitiously and then ISIS militants.
“He’s calling for a temporary shutdown of Muslims entering the United States, until we can figure out what’s going on,” says the narrator of the 30-second ad.
Trump said he hopes the ad spots impress upon undecided voters that the country has become “a dumping ground.”
“The world is laughing at us, at our stupidity,” he said. “It’s got to stop. We’ve got to get smart fast — or else we won’t have a country.”
Trump said he wanted his first ad to highlight his differences from other GOP candidates, including his refusal to be politically correct bucking political correctness and his penchant for using strong, dramatic language about America’s national security threats.
“It’s about immigration and safety, and they play hand in hand,” he said. “If you look at every poll, I’m the leader on the economy, but it’s immigration and ISIS, too. I’m bringing them all together.”

Trump said he wasn’t sure he needed the ads.
“Honestly, I don’t know. I think I’m probably wasting the money,” he said on an interview with CBS’s Face The Nation. “But I’m $35 million under budget. Look, I was going to have $35 or 40 million spent by now. I haven’t spent anything. I almost feel guilty. I think if you want to know the truth, I’m doing the ads. I’m leading by, as you all say, a lot.”
“I want to be certain,” he said. “I want to win Iowa. I do great with evangelicals. And I do great with the Tea Party. And I’m doing great. I have a real good feeling with Iowa.”
