San Fran Sheriff Who Released Kate Steinle’s Killer Just Received MASSIVE Dose Of Justice

Embattled San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi lost his re-election bid on Tuesday to former Chief Deputy Vicki Hennessey in the aftermath of the tragic shooting death of Kate Steinle by an illegal immigrant.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that newly re-elected Mayor Ed Lee (D) was quick to blame “poor leadership” for the sheriff department’s several controversies under Mirkarimi, including the release of Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, the man charged with fatally shooting 32-year-old Kathryn Steinle in July. The case sparked a nationwide debate on immigration policy, broadly, and sanctuary cities, specifically.

In March, Mirkarimi’s Sheriff’s Department requested custody of Lopez-Sanchez after the illegal immigrant completed serving a 46 month sentence in federal prison. The Mexican national had been imprisoned for repeatedly returning to the United States after being deported five times. The feds intended to deport him again, but honored San Francisco’s bench warrant for Lopez-Sanchez regarding a 10 year-old marijuana possession charge. After holding the illegal immigrant for three weeks, he was released onto the streets of San Francisco without informing federal authorities, which was consistent with a “gag order” policy Mirkarimi had in place. The Washington Times reports, “Ms. Hennessy had said she would ease the policy and rescind Sheriff Mirkarimi’s ‘gag order’ allowing only limited communication or cooperation with federal immigration authorities.” Last month, the Board of Supervisors reaffirmed San Francisco’s status as a sanctuary city in a 6-5 vote, which tabled a resolution calling on Mirkarimi to change his “gag order” policy. “When asked what about releasing inmates if they have ICE holds on them, Hennessy responded that she and Mirkarimi have ‘different interpretations’ of the city policy. ‘I think there is room for notification, not detention, but notification when we have someone in our custody that has a felony. I will work with the city attorney’s office and others,’” NBC News reports.
